A man was shot and killed Saturday night near Stateline Speedway in Kootenai County. Deputies responded around 7:10 p.m. during the Lantern Festival near Post Falls and quickly detained a suspect leaving the area. Here’s your Magic Valley sports update—High school baseball action saw several local teams battling to keep their seasons alive. In 5A, Twin Falls is moving on after wins over Bishop Kelly and Skyline. Burley shut out Preston 1-0 behind strong pitching from Braxton Warr and Mack Haynes but later fell to Bonneville 11-1 to finish the year at 18 and 9. In 4A, Filer dropped two games to Marsh Valley, while Kimberly was eliminated by Homedale. In 3A, Wendell rolled past Priest River 17-7 before falling to Salmon. Declo and Lighthouse Christian also saw their seasons come to an end in regional play.
Magic Valley softball teams are heading to state after dominant wins in Saturday play-in games. In 4A, Gooding blanked South Fremont 10-0 as Chailey Patton drove in four runs on three hits. Olivia Rogers was lights out in the circle, striking out 10 and allowing just one hit over five innings. In 3A, Wendell crushed Ririe 16-0. Breanna Comstock powered the Trojans with four RBIs, a first-inning home run, and 11 strikeouts in a no-hit performance. Both Gooding and Wendell have officially punched their ticket to the state tournament.
A Magic Valley Teen is building quite a bowling legacy. Fourteen-year-old Braylynn Jeroue of O’Leary Middle School captured her third straight state bowling championship in February. Jeroue says she first got into the sport thanks to her mom, Kelsie White, and now bowls several times a week. Coaches say Braylynn’s dedication and talent could put her on track for even more state titles in the years ahead.
The College of Southern Idaho baseball season came to an end Friday with a 12-4 loss to Salt Lake Community College in the Region 18 Championship. The Golden Eagles fell behind early after giving up 10 runs in the first inning, but still finished with seven hits, including a home run from Mack Evans. Tayson Howard went 3-for-4 at the plate. CSI wraps up a strong season at 43 and 14 overall, and three Golden Eagles—Crew Secrist, Ryder Cutlip, and Trey Purser—earned Region 18 All-Tournament honors.
The 19th-ranked College of Southern Idaho softball team closed out the regular season in style Friday, beating North Idaho College 8-6 and 18-0 in Scenic West Athletic Conference play. With the sweep, the Golden Eagles finish as SWAC Co-Champions alongside Salt Lake CC with a 26 and 5 conference record. CSI powered game one with home runs from Jade Romero, Kyli Carrell, and Rilyne Keck, while Emerson Fuller tossed a one-hit shutout in the game two blowout. The Golden Eagles now head to the
Region 18 Tournament Tuesday in Salt Lake, where they’ll face Snow College.
Boise State track and field wrapped up its final tune-up before the Mountain West Championships with four personal records at the Portland Twilight Saturday. Senior Noelani Krauss led the way with a collegiate-best win and PR in the women’s 800 meters at 2:06.81. Freshman Drew Bradeson also posted a personal best in the men’s 800, while Nanette Novak and Bianca Boehnke each set PRs in the women’s 15 hundred. The Broncos now head to Fresno for the Mountain West Outdoor Championships May 14th through the 16th.
Idaho State softball is headed to the NCAA Tournament. The Bengals were selected Sunday to the Eugene Regional and open play Friday night against host Oregon at 8 Mountain Time. The regional field also includes Saint Mary’s and Mississippi State as Idaho State looks to make a postseason run.
